“Dreamweaver” Jane Scheff has been a big inspiration to other students. She whipped out three area rugs based on what she learned in last year’s Jason Collingwood workshop. The process of designing and weaving a rug can be daunting because there are so many options and ways to go about it. Is it going to be weft-faced, warp faced, or more balanced? Will the weft be wool, cotton, or made with...

One side effect of the muscle wire actuators is the fact that the loom is so quiet (it is a bit uncanny). Upon our return we will meet with Nathan and Chris and get the kinks out to accurately weave with 64 threads. The main problem remaining is to design the heddles more accurately and we will be working on that in August but probably a bit thru fall as well. Once we get back to the US we are...

In a historic 1790 home located in the little hamlet of Kingsbury,NY, I have found my passion. I originally purchased the house for a place to set up all my antique looms. At some point, bringing the house back to life and the dream to weave became so entangled, I couldn't tell them apart. I no longer knew where one ended and the other began...they became inseparable,interwoven..Now I am doing...

What I’m Doing on My Summer Vacation I’ve spent the last year living a life-long dream. As a teenager I decided I wanted a loom (I don’t even remember why). At that age I couldn’t afford a floor loom, but I could purchase a small rigid heddle loom to play with. I used it on occasion, but it was never really what I wanted. I experimented with weaving in different ways over the years: basketry,...

Continuing on my exploration of climate-appropriate neckwear — this piece is a variation of the previous one, handwoven in natural and resist dyed ramie. Ramie (or Chinese nettle) is turning out to be one of my favourite fibres to work with, although I have also found it to be surprisingly trickier than linen because of its brittleness – my warp ends snapped twice as I was winding it onto the...
